{"id":2360,"date":"2019-09-27T12:21:31","date_gmt":"2019-09-27T12:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.tetra.net\/en\/en\/?p=2360"},"modified":"2019-08-14T12:27:04","modified_gmt":"2019-08-14T12:27:04","slug":"angelfish-pterophyllum-scalare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.tetra.net\/en-en\/angelfish-pterophyllum-scalare\/","title":{"rendered":"Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Characteristics\/origin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angelfish\nbelong to the cichlid family and can be divided into three species: altum\nangelfish (<em>Pterophyllum altum<\/em>),\nteardrop angelfish (<em>Pterophyllum leopoldi<\/em>)\nand angelfish (<em>Pterophyllum scalare<\/em>),\nas described here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although\n<em>Pterophyllum scalare<\/em> can reach a length of up to 15 cm and height of\napprox. 25 cm, making them far larger than other aquarium fish, they are still\namong the most popular fish in the fishkeeping sector. This is largely due to\ntheir extraordinary appearance. They look like they have been flattened from\nthe side and have a rather pointed mouth. Their unusual body shape and\ndifferent-length fin rays on the dorsal and anal fins therefore make them look\nsomewhat triangular. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angelfish\nare native to South America, where they can mainly be found in calm,\nslow-flowing water bodies and rain forest rivers in Brazil, Colombia, Peru and\nGuyana. If kept correctly, they can live for up to 15 years. It is hard to\ndistinguish between males and females. <em>Pterophyllum\nscalare<\/em> are naturally silvery in colour with four characteristic black\nstripes down their body, although cultivated varieties in other colours are now\nalso available. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Aquarium\nand water<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To\ncreate an appropriate habitat, <em>Pterophyllum scalare<\/em> should be kept in\nlarge and, above all, tall aquariums. We recommend tropical temperatures of\n24\u00b0C to 30\u00b0C. During the\nspawning season, they form pairs that create a territory and defend it against\nall other aquarium dwellers. In the case of slightly smaller aquariums, the\nfish can also be optimally kept as a single pair. Despite creating territories,\n<em>Pterophyllum scalare<\/em> are peaceful fish that are well-suited to large\ncommunity tanks. They mix particularly well with larger fish like larger tetras\nor catfish. Small fish like neon tetras are not recommended as they may be\neaten by adult angelfish. Angelfish tend to favour the middle region of the\naquarium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Planting\nand decoration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This\nspecies prefers aquariums with dense edge vegetation. When choosing plants,\nVallisneria species are especially recommended. Angelfish also particularly\nlike aquariums with roots, as they offer them safe havens where they can hide.\nDue to their size, the fish also need plenty of free space to swim around\nthough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Diet<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As\nomnivores, angelfish can be optimally fed with premium dry food products such\nas TetraMin or Tetra Menu. The food should not be too small for the fish. To\nadd welcome variety, you can also give angelfish natural foods such as Tetra\nFreshDelica Bloodworms.
